Dear friends at the Living Room:

Hi everyone. I know many of you, but for those I don't know, my name is Lisa
Bielawa, I'm a composer in New York, and I am having a music theater piece
produced in San Francisco this summer, for which I am looking for singing
performers who live in the Bay Area. Bay Area playwright Erik Ehn and I
received a Haas Creative Work Fund grant to produce the piece this summer,
with a professional cast of 7 and 4 instrumentalists. It is called "Phrenic
Crush" - it requires both lyrical singing and acting for spoken dialogue.

Short description of the piece: "an opera exploring the natural and social
history of tuberculosis from the nineteenth century through its current
interaction with the AIDS epidemic and among the homeless. The piece is set
in San Francisco, in and around single room occupancy hotels of the
Tenderloin and SoMa neighborhoods. Its development invites active
participation of the hotel residencts, local medical community...the finished
opera will be presented in three full performances at SF State and one at St.
Boniface Church in the Tenderloin, proceeds from which will benefit the Sixth
Street Merchant's and Resident's Association and St. Anthony's medical
clinic." Our rehearsal period starts July 5, and performances are July
31-August 3, with a flexible rehearsal schedule of 20-25 hours per week.
There is a $1000 honorarium for all performers.

Our auditions are June 10-12 in the Creative Arts Building at SF State. We
are asking people to prepare a vocal selection from either contemporary opera
or contemporary music theater and a two- minute monologue. We will have an
accompanist. To set up auditions, people can call Stage Manager Clyde Sheets
at (415) 931-6587. If you have a fax, I could fax you the press release and
audition announcement.

If you are interested, you can simply phone Clyde Sheets to set up an
audition for next week. If you have specific questions, please feel free to
e-mail me personally. Thanks everyone! Take care - Lisa Bielawa
