Dinner Map: Performance Piece

(for any number of players)

1st performance: Jan 20, 1988.
Book: Machiavelli, “The Prince”
Phrase: “So As to Deprive the Pope”
Result: Egg rolls, tapa, and San Miguel beer at AUR a’ BUN restaurant in Echo Park (Los Angeles)

The “score” is as follows:

  1. Open a book to any page (close eyes) and touch spot on page with index finger. Take the sentence most covered by finger tip and transcribe into numbers: A=1, B=2, etc.
  2. Flip a coin to determine a direction (heads=left, tails=right) to be associated with each number.
  3. Travel the number in blocks in the direction indicated for each letter of the sentence.
  4. When you arrive at the end of the sentence, find the nearest restaurant, grocery store of other source of food. Choose a word from the sentence and use it and its transcription to help you decide what food to get, and if applicable, how to prepare and eat it.

NEIGHBORHOOD VERSION – – Use only the word most covered by your finger tip, not the whole sentence, for directions to food. Another word from the same sentence may be used to help make further decisions (4) if desired.

NOTES:

  1. If a sentence is too long but a word too short, a phrase may be used.
  2. A new block may be construed as beginning every time a street intersects the street upon which you are travelling.
  3. If you reach a dead end before travelling the number of blocks indicated for a particular letter, then just go on to the next letter and proceed from where you are.
  4. When traveling on the freeway, the distance between exits counts as a block. When leaving the freeway, make your left or right turn on the first STREET you reach (do not count the exit ramp.)
  5. If you are instructed to turn left or right at a point where there is no road in that direction, consider yourself to be turned to face that direction anyway, nd there being no place to go, proceed with the next letter. (Thus, if you have arrived at point A from the west and are faced with the following directions, (B) – 2 – left (O) – 15 – right (B)-2-right you should end up facing south at point A.)
  6. It’s OK to enjoy your surroundings as you travel.
  7. Bon Appetit!
