Joined by Smith on keyboards, Dargel (voice, synthesizers, drum machines) will perform three original song cycles about convicted criminals, sexual incompetents, and wannabe-amputees. Dargel’s deviant characters are portrayed with a sympathetic attention to detail in his song lyrics and by the musical twists and turns he employs as a composer subverting typical song forms. According to Gramophone magazine, “Dargel has no fear of jettisoning formal music elements to emphasize the words, or vice versa, often letting [his] songs veer off in totally unexpected directions.”
After a short break, the celebrated avantgarde electronic musician Tom Hamilton will perform a new work that uses fragments of speech as “oscillators” for a generative system. The speech fragments come from answers he gave to a recorded interview posted on listening-gallery.subtropics.org The presentation of Tom Hamilton is made possible in collaboration with the South Florida Composers Alliance.
