The Action Theater Ensemble from Berkeley, California, performs "VISIONS,"
December 11 & 12, 1998, at 8:30PM, at Pentacle, 104 Franklin Street, New York
City, tickets $10.00.

In conjunction with the 6th Annual New York Improvisation Festival, the Action
Theater Ensemble- Sten Rudstrom, Heather Harpham, Sidsel Pape, and Frank
Schneider-performs at Pentacle, Friday and Saturday, December 12 and 13, 1998,
8:30PM, New York City. The multi-member group has completed extensive studies
and apprenticeships with Ruth Zaporah, developer of Action Theater, a body-
based improvisational form that employs sound, movement and language.
Sten Rudstrom is a performer/writer who creates solo and collaborative
dance/theater/music works. He gained his early performance art experience in
Berlin, producing several solo works and forming the site-specific
movement/music/art band Another Slice of Reagan's Dick. Returning to the
United States in 1986, he formed the group Infantile Dance Baby Theater in
Minnesota. After attending California Institute of the Arts, Rudstrom began
collaboration with Stokley Towless and Ernie Lafky on a work entitled Behind
Every Great Man Is A Thin Boy Struggling To Get Out, which received funding
from the Franklin Furnace Fund for Performance Art, and was subsequently
produced in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Chicago. Since
arriving in the Bay Area in 1990, Rudstrom has studied with Ruth Zaporah, Sara
Shelton-Mann, Tracey Rhoades, Debbie Taylor, and Julie Kane, and has performed
in San Francisco at Theater Artaud, Footwork/Dancer's Group, New Performance
Gallery, and The Marsh. He was an 1995-97 Artist-In-Residence at ODC/SF
Peformance Gallery. In 1996, he produced, directed and performed in Theater of
Cruelty, a critically acclaimed show based on the life and writings of Antonin
Artaud. He also continues to perform nationally at venues including Dixon
Place, Highways, LACE, Splinter Group, St. Mark's Church, Boulder Art Center,
and the Contemporary Fringe Festival/LA.

Action Theater, a physically-based improvisational theater form devised by
Ruth Zaporah, breaks all action down to the three components of sound,
movement and language and three choices of action: shift, transform and
develop. Performers stop what they're doing and start doing something else
(shift), continue what they are doing (develop) or slowly change what they are
doing into something else (transform). Performances are often volatile and
dynamic with frequent erratic changes in energy and feeling states.

A pure improvisational form, Action Theater performances begin without
structure or plan. Performers enter the stage with no preconceived ideas and
build the composition step by step. All actions arise spontaneously, the
performers' awareness focused on the present moment. Nothing created in the
performances has ever been presented by the performers before and unfolds as
is-both the audience and the performers witnessing the material for the first
time.
