Hello Everyone,

I hate to be the messenger of bad news, but I feel that it is
appropriate to make a record of the passing of Mel Powell at the Living
Room List. Mel Powell was a Mentor for many of us at Cal Arts and
touched an enormous amount of individuals during his stay on this
planet, including Randy.

When I first met Mel, I was eager to challenge his theories of analysis,

thinking (and saying) that his ways were old fashion. But after a year
of lessons with him I began to see how "out" he was. He taught me
counterpoint! A counterpoint that is in the mind and from the heart. A
counterpoint that is felt and heard.

Then the summer after my first semester with him I was in a Vintage
Clothing Store in Chicago and I heard this wild piano solo over some big

band stuff on the radio playing in the store, and I do mean ~WiLd~! Then

the announcer comes on and says, "that was Mel Powell on Piano with the
Benny Goodman band." (I think it was Benny Goodman). I went completely
beezurk! I had a fit in that store, telling everyone that's who I am
studying under, jumpin up and down, freakin out...Anyway, I was truly
blown away, and still am to this day. I will miss him very much.

Hopeful, Randy will be able to hook up with him.

Peace,
Wiley
