My first conversation with Cage took place in Santa Cruz around 1980. My
telephone rang and a very familiar voice with almost absent fundamental
asked ''Gordon?''. Somehow I put one and one together very quickly and
answered: ''Mr. Cage, this is actually a wrong number, but I just happen to
have Gordon Mumma's number''. He answered: ''then it isn't a wrong number
at all.''
